Part One: Why write an essay?
*The purpose of an essay is to state and develop a point with adequate evidence.
When a student is asked to write an essay, the student should first settle on the topic s/he wishes to explore as s/he
composes the essay. In many cases, the topic will already be provided for the student by his/her instructor.
Once a topic has been selected, the student should then decide on the point s/he wants to make about the topic (subject).
The main point the writer wishes to express within the essay is the essayâs thesis. This main point should be expressed
within a thesis statement. An effective thesis statement introduces the topic of the essay and the writerâs attitude, opinion, or
point about the topic.
Example Thesis Statement:
Fighting in schools has escalated because violence is glorified in the media.
Topic (subject) = Fighting in schools
Point = has escalated
Opinion = because violence is glorified in the media
The thesis often includes a plan of development â a preview of the major points that will be used within the essay body to
support the thesis (a common thesis structure is the threepoint
