What is the Posting About: (This is the question that the professor had asked us to write about. This information is being
provided as an understanding of when working on the response to the student’s posting):
Various organizations use a wide variety of selection techniques in choosing new employees. How would you feel if you
applied for a position with an organization that you really wanted to work for, and found out that they used handwriting
analysis and honesty testing as part of the selection process?
Posting of Student Responding To:
Depending on the position I was trying to be hired into, I think I would be fine if an organization told me they used
handwriting analysis and honesty testing as a part of their selection process. Many organizations are beginning to use
some sort of testing to decide who they should hire. The organizations feel that the predictors are useful and can help
determine success (Heneman, 2008, p. 545). Even the military has testing that is done before they are officially enlisted.
The individuals who are being recruited take the ASVAB test. The intent of the ASVAB is to measure a recruit’s current
abilities and then predict academic and occupational success (ASVAB, nd). Based on the results of the test they are placed
into a job specialty. To me it makes perfect sense to make sure an individual is not assigned to a mechanical job but yet
they have no understanding of mechanics. I was hired into a position that required me to have a polygraph. I had no
problem with taking it because it meant I would not get the position. Prediction saves time and money for organizations.
I can see where organizations feel these tests and different kind of analyses could be helpful to their hiring process. Too
much time and money is wasted recruiting and hiring individuals with the wrong skill sets. For example, it may not be an
issue of the recruit’s ability to perform a duty but an introvert probably should not be hired for a job where they need to
communicate orally on a daily basis.
