In the article “Justice on Behalf of Heaven,” Henrietta Harrison makes an argument about the origin of the Boxer rebellion rooted in xenophobic and anti-Christian sentiments among many Chinese. Why does Harrison argue that many Chinese harbored anti-Christian sentiment in the late-nineteenth century? What evidence does she use to support this argument? Lastly, having established Harrison’s argument, use the primary source “Complete Illustration of the Heretical Religion” (online at: http://ocw.mit.edu/ans7870/21f/21f.027/cause_of_the_riots/cr_book_01.html ) as evidence to either support or refute Herrison’s argument. Construct a three page essay (with standard formatting and citation – MLA, Chicago, or any other academic form of citation is acceptable, but most historians use Chicago footnote style if you have no preference). Be sure that your essay does the following three things: 1) Clearly identify and state Harrison’s argument in the article “Justice on Behalf of Heaven.” 2) Identify some (not all) key points of evidence she uses to support her argument. 3) Use the primary source “Complete Illustration of the Heretical Religion” to either support, refute, or modify Harrison’s argument. Be sure to clearly state your position and use the primary source as evidence to support your position.
