Each essay must be at least three pages and not more than four pages, double-spaced (except the heading and any footnotes, which should be single-spaced). An essay is not three pages long when there is some text on the third page, but when the third page is entirely full.
All information drawn from Barzun must be supported by a citation to the appropriate page or pages in Barzun. Not just quotes, but everything that comes from Barzun rather than the student’s own mind must be cited. Each citation to Barzun should comprise simply the page number or numbers in parentheses in the body of the paper. Although these are not research papers and I do not expect outside research, the student might choose to bring in information from another source in order to provide greater insight into the question posed. If the student does so the student must cite to that source in a footnote using CMS format as set forth in Hacker and Somers’ A Writer’s Reference, 7th edition or 8th edition. Also, students may not, under any circumstances, bring into an essay any information drawn from any secondary source that is not peer-reviewed and scholarly in nature. There is almost nothing one would get from a general web search that would meet these standards. No bibliography is necessary.
