The purpose of this paper will be to outline how improper waste management on an industrial and municipal level i.e.
industrial and agricultural runoff,
urban pollution, and inadequate filtration of waste, affect the quality of water in Pakistan.
The paper will examine both ecological and physiological affects that contaminated water can have and how the resource
as a whole is compromised.
ESSAY PROPOSAL HAS BEEN PROVIDED WITH THREE SOURCES. PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THIS GUIDELINE.
In this assignment you will write an essay that discusses the impact of one human activity on one a resource within one
country. Recall that you already chose the activity, resource and country in your essay proposal. You should not change
your activity, resource or country for your essay unless instructed by your TA. Any change requires the permission of your
REQUIRED ESSAY STRUCTURE:
1. Introduction (approx. 1 page)
i. An introduction to the focus of your essay (i.e., the activity and its impact on the resource in your country), noting its
emergence, extent and severity. In other words, in this section you are identifying your topic and briefly introducing the
major trends and implications.
ii. Statement of Aim. In one sentence (about 25 words or fewer) state what you are setting out to accomplish with the rest of
the essay. Pay attention to the words you use. For example, if you are going to âanalyze and evaluateâ an issue, a
descriptive essay will not fulfill the stated intentions. For example, your statement of aim may read: âThe aim of this essay is
to evaluate the impacts of logging on forests within Nigeria and to recommend solutions to manage these impactsâ.
2. Description of the human activity and its impacts (approx. 2 pages)
i. Describe the human activity and its impacts on the resource. You should describe: a) relevant characteristics of the
biophysical and socioeconomic environmentÍ¾ and, b) major components, trends and relationships and between the two.
ii. Present evidence to illustrate biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics, and major components, trends and
relationships. All illustrations (tables, maps, graphs) must be referred to in the text. For example: âFigure 3 demonstrates
that deforestation and log exports in Nigeria have increased simultaneouslyâ.
3. Evaluation (approx. 1.5 pages)
i. Identify and describe relevant policies or technologies that are currently used to mitigate the human impact on the
ii. Assess and evaluate the effectiveness of the identified policies or technologies as a solution to the human impact. Be
critical. What aspects are viable? Why? What aspects have been less successful? Why? Why is (or is not) this solution
appropriate for your chosen country?
4. Alternative solutions and recommendations (approx. 0.5 pages)
i. Recommend and defend a viable solution to managing the impact of the activity on the resource into the future. The
preferred solution should be based on the analysis undertaken in sections (23)
above. If you agree with solutions already
in place, discuss why. If you disagree, discuss why and suggest an alternative.
ii. Conclusion. A brief statement summing up the main argument and most important points you have made in the essay.
1. The essay must be typed, double spaced,
Arial or Times New Roman font and not exceed 1700 words. One
hundred more or less words of essay text will not be penalized. Figures and bibliography will add extra length to your
pages of text â this is ok. Titles, bibliography (or references page) and figure captions are NOT part of the word count.

2. Be sure to include a title and use headings to organize the essay. Do not include a separate title page. Put your name
and student ID number below the essay title on the first page of your essay.
3. In the text of your essay, use citations when using facts, direct quotations or presenting ideas that came from your
references (i.e., when the facts or ideas are not your own). Using bracketed citations (e.g. Smith, 2012Í¾ Harris and Jones,
2014, p. 3) is required though the specific method you choose to follow for this style of referencing is up to you.
4. Citations / References: Include all references cited in the paper (a minimum of 6 is
required). Three (3) must be peer reviewed journal articles (Please refer to the essay proposal). Your SIX sources must be
dated 2012 or later with at least one from 20132015.
5. Four illustrations are required (e.g. tables, graphs, maps, diagrams). This includes at least one map and no more than
one picture. Each must be referenced, properly labeled and referred to (with page number) in the text.
