issues are raised, discussed, and debated. For example, almost all our national conversations can be linked in
some way to business interests or the economy immigration
policy and health care reform, to name just two. These
issues and many others prompt lawyers, policymakers, business leaders, and citizens to express their pointsofview,
in
writing.
This assignment will give you the opportunity to make a recommendation about a current businessrelated
controversy or
debate, one that specifically involves a question of business ethics. Important: A controversy dilemma, or debate, by
definition, generates differing and probably contentious views on the matter. Do not choose to make a recommendation
about which there is already broad agreement!
You will write a “white paper” for submission to the senior leadership in your organization in which you make a case for
your company or organization to adopt a particular public position or policy on the issue of concern (an issue of your
choosing). Pick a company you’re intrigued by and a job title you’d like to have, soon or someday. We will discuss the ways
in which researchbased
white papers are used in today’s business environment.
You will clearly stake out your position and create a logical chain of reasoning to support it. You must defend your pointofview
against potential objections. The tone, vocabulary, and argument should be appropriate to your profession and your
company/organization.
