My thesis is about the American hegemonic project from neo-gramscian perspective. This section should investigate how did internal dynamics within Saudi Arabia manifest themselves in reading the social upheaval across the Arab World; and how norms and beliefs have changed dramatically in the region to Riyadh’s advantage. This is important for me as through norms and values, as Kratochwil argues, people pursue goals, share meanings, communicate with each other, criticise assertions, and justify actions. Such force of obligation makes certain policies and actions, including security arrangements, ‘desirable, legitimated and intelligible.’ Examining the rise of new norms in the region, therefore, will be carried out with references to the social upheavals in Syria and Bahrain. The two case offers rich scope for analysing identity incongruence within the region, notably between the Sunni majority and the much smaller Shia population.
Wishing this in mind, I want to reflect the Obama administration on the Saudi policy using Prospect Theory and the Laclau and Mouffe theory of hegemony.
