After reading the article, outline six (6) major faults with the author’s central claims about multiculturalism and Islam (two separate paragraphs). In other words, why are his arguments against multiculturalism and his claims about Islam weak from an evidentiary standpoint? Students must highlight six (6) key statements that are suspect (three about the “failure” of multiculturalism and three about the “dangers” of Islam) and then explain why these claims are misleading according to the research found in Michael Adams’ articles.
When a rebuttal is used to challenge Sibley’s claims, simply end the rebuttal with a bracketed source and a page number (Adams: 14). A rebuttal can be an “exact quotation,” polling data, statistics from a scientific study, or the major highlights of a primary document. Only quote from Sibley or Adams; extra sources are not required. This exercise will help students realize the importance of using a scientific approach when challenging claims made by op-ed writers. Since the essay is only three-four (3-4) pages maximum, be very specific, and get right to the point. An introduction and conclusion will be required, but keep them brief (1/2 page maximum each). Both critical thinking and technical writing skills will be marked.
