National Situation Updates custom essay

FEMA maintains National Situation Updates, designed to provide emergency managers with information and graphics drawn from myriad agencies, governmental, media, and other. The materials provided can be used to promote situational awareness or potentially have other applications.

For this unit’s discussion, visit http://www.fema.gov/emergency/reports/index.shtm. The situation updates start with today’s date and work backward. The site also lists archives for reports extending back to 2005 (and including Hurricane Katrina). Visit the report from June 7, 2011. Note how subordinate elements overlap or are incomplete and should be read with others. For example, “fire activity” lists a roll up of fires across the country, but “Fire Management Assistance Grant” details a few truly significant fires. Also, “flooding” is captured and reported by five separate regions, but the “Significant National Weather” details reveal that there are many rainstorms headed to those same regions.

Assignment Guidelines

  • In 4–5 paragraphs, address the following:
    • Read through the reports of the last week. What trends or patterns are worth noting for the nation?
      • What information is particularly important for the region your county is located in?
      • Do you anticipate that your county will be specifically impacted by any of the conditions that are listed for the week?
        • Why or why not?
        • In answering this, consider how conditions elsewhere might ultimately impact your region or county. (Be creative and think about environmental, political, economic, or other factors that are normally beyond an emergency manager’s concerns but certainly in the realm of community leaders.)
    • Visit reports from May 10, 2011.
      • Which is the most important event of the day, in your opinion?
        • Do any of the incidents have meaning for your county—how so or why not?
      • Name and detail at least two significant events of that day with which you heard little or nothing.
        • What might each of these incidents mean for that region, in terms of consequences beyond the precise incident?
      • Examine the section on disaster declaration activity for this day. Research independently one of the disaster declarations that is named (specify which one) and give details about its genesis and status. Reference the source that you used for your information.

Obituaries remembrance of President Abraham Lincoln custom essay

Write two obituaries (minimum 250 words each) in remembrance of President Abraham Lincoln. To complete assignment, you are going to assume the role of an editor for fictional newspaper on two distinctly different dates.

It is your choice of who your audience is and what emotion the content contains, but each article should provide perspective on the political, economic, and social impact that he had on the nation before, during and after the Civil War.

1. The first will be dated April 16, 1865, and will need to assume the role of an obituary from that date.  Keep in mind what would be known, thought, and felt at the same time.

2.The second will be dated April 16, 2016, and will need to assume the role of a remembrance of his legacy. Consider the legacy 150 years after death.

Both obituaries will be submitted together as one document. The details about Lincoln’s time, location, and cause of death will of course be common to all obituaries and do not need to be cited; any other materials (e.g., quotes, accounts) must be cited and referenced using APA style. Causes of the Civil War custom essay

Beginning with the earliest European settlements, the North and South developed as very different regions. By the 19th century, the two regions had different economic bases, different social structures, and different perspectives on slavery and states’ rights. Tensions between the two regions eventually erupted in war. In this assignment, you will examine the underlying differences, the reasons behind them, and how they contributed to conflict.

Why did the perspectives of northerners on issues such as states’ rights and slavery differ from southerners?

Your assignment is to write a short essay differentiating the cultural and social systems developed in the North and South during the antebellum period.  Offer your opinion as to how the differences between North and South contributed to the coming of the Civil War.

Your essay should address:

The differences in culture and society in the two regions.

Draw some general conclusions about the effect of these differences on the political and economic issues underlying the conflicts that developed into the Civil War.

Do gun owners give the Republican Party higher ratings than people who do not own guns custom essay

Do gun owners give the Republican Party higher ratings than  people who do not own guns? To find out, a researcher tests a regression model in which the dependent variable, y, is a feeling thermometer scale of the Republican Party. Respondents can give the Republican Party ratings that range from 0 (cold or negative) to 100 (warm or positive). The researcher creates a dummy variable, named “owner,” coded 1 for respondents who own a gun and 0 for respondents who do not. Owner is the independent variable, x. Here are the regression results: y = 44.8 + 8.0(owner) Standard error of b = 1.1 Adjusted R2 = .02 A. Based on these findings, the researcher concludes: “People who do not own guns rated the Republicans at 44.8, on average. However, among gun owners the Republicans averaged only 8.0 on the scale. Therefore, people who do not own guns are more pro-Republican than are people who own guns.” Is this inference correct? Why or why not? B. Another conclusion reached by the researcher: “The independent variable does not have a statistically significant effect on the dependent variable.” Is this inference correct? Why or why not? C. Yet another of the researcher’s conclusions: “The independent variable explains very little of the variation in the dependent variable.” Is this inference correct? Why or why not?
