Paper details
In Mozart’s Brain and the Fighter Pilot, Restak reminds us that having a “superpowered”
memory is an important part of
any highly intelligent person’s abilities. In each chapter, Restak shared numerous examples of how to improve memory
and cognitive functioning. Discuss the following in a 24
page paper:
1. Discuss two techniques/exercises that you have used before and why it was effective.
2. Discuss two techniques/exercises that you would like to use in the future and why, and how it will benefit your brain,
memory, and/or intelligence.
Papers should follow the APA style formatting guidelines including 1″ margins on all sides, double spaced, 12 point Times
New Roman font, header and page numbers at top of page, title page, intext
citations and references page.
The examples are listed below:
1. Discuss two techniques/exercises that you have used before and why it was effective.
⢠Turn your feelings and emotions to your advantagePerhaps
this has happened to you: You find yourself distrusting
someone but canât put into words, much less logically defend, your intuitive feelings. In the interest of remaining
âreasonableâ you put aside your reservations. Later, you find out to your regret that your initial hunch was correct. Most of
us have been conditioned since childhood to distrust our emotions. We are encouraged to reason things out and always
be prepared to justify our decisions and actions by logic and reasoning. While such advice is not always bad, you
shouldnât rely on it entirely. As discussed at the beginning of chapter 12, your brain is not a logic machine. It is organized to
process emotions along with logic.
⢠Take active measures to reduce stressthe
worst aspect of stress is the physical harm that it can wreak on the brain.
2. Discuss two techniques/exercises that you would like to use in the future and why, and how it will benefit your brain,
memory, and/or intelligence.
⢠Let the brain just be the brainTo
allow your brain to operate at its best, it is first necessary to gain control over the factors
that interfere with its optimal functioning. Although the influence of these factors may vary from person to person, they
include: Difficulties in concentration and focus Poor imaging ability Memory weaknesses Organizational problems Mood
disorders Performance anxiety Lack of followthrough
Ignorance of the brainâs machinery. First, your brain works best
when you donât try to micromanage it by too much conscious direction. You also must free it from the impediments imposed
by unregulated emotions and the harmful effects of stress.
⢠Practice forms of mental hygieneâ
mental hygieneâ to describe the measures a person can take to make the brain
function more efficiently. Just as the body benefits from exercise, good diet, and a temperate lifestyle, the brain works
better if a person follows certain mental guidelines. The most important guideline involves not paying too much attention to
our feelings. âThere is no better known or more generally useful precept in oneâs personal selfdiscipline,
than that which
bids us pay primary attention to what we do and express, and not to care too much for what we feel.
